Wabamun was first settled on the east side of Moonlight Bay on the Mewassin Lac Ste Anne Trail. The railroad started to move west from Edmonton and the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company purchased land on the west side of Moonlight Bay to build a townsite that they would promote as a summer destination. When you visit the Wabamun & District Museum you will see many artifacts, stories and pictures that tell of these early tourists who would travel to Wabamun by train for picnics, boat excursions on the lake and summer vacations. The Museum is housed in the United Church building that was built in 1934. The exhibits not only tell the story of early tourist but also the hard work of early pioneers who were farmers, coal miners, mink farmers, commercial fishermen and more.
